Fall Home Maintenance Tips

I don't know where the summer went so fast, but Fall but here we are. This is a critical time to prepare your home for the harshest weather of the year coming our way, and our homes and their systems take a beating, so each year I share these tips to help you get ready. Take care of these items now to ensure your home is in good shape for fall and winter, and help protect your families biggest investment. 

AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION IS WORTH A POUND OF CURE!

YARD MAINTENANCE
  • Seed bald patches in your lawn
  • apply fall fertilizer
  • rake leaves
  • cut lawn to 2" and run your gas mower/trimmer dry of fuel after last cut
  • divide and replant over crowded perennials
  • plant spring bulbs
  • general pruning of trees, shrubs and roses
OUTSIDE OF HOME
  • fix cracks in driveway and sidewalks
  • repair retaining walls
  • repair loose roof shingles
  • inspect flashings around chimneys, skylights etc.
  • inspect drainage around foundation
  • ensure soil/plants don't touch siding
  • turn off water lines to outdoor taps - remove hose from bibs, leave faucet open
  • clean gutters and downspouts
  • blow our irrigation lines
  • re-organize garage, sweep floor, put clutter away
  • inspect all weather stripping and caulking around doors and windows
INSIDE OF HOME
  • replace furnace filter
  • service gas appliances - furnace, hot water tank, fireplace
  • clean air ducts
  • change batteries - smoke alarms, CO2 alarms
  • check fire extinguisher dates
  • clean/test wood burning fireplace - hire a chimney sweep for cleaning
  • check/restock home emergency kit
